A scrawny little kitten was discovered all alone in an apartment parking garage after the flood in Austin.

Concerned residents spotted her hiding beneath parked cars and knew they couldn’t leave her behind. “Worried for her safety, they worked together to catch her,” shared Megyn, president of Critical Kitten Care Fund, in an interview with Love Meow.

With local animal shelters overwhelmed and at capacity, Megyn and her team at Critical Kitten Care Fund didn’t hesitate to step in and give the kitten the help she needed.

The kitten, now named Sylvie, was severely underweight and painfully timid—but not the slightest bit aggressive. “Because she hadn’t been socialized, she was absolutely terrified of people and would do anything to stay hidden,” Megyn explained.

But with some nutritious food, gentle care, and a little patience, Sylvie slowly began to change. Sometimes, all it takes is kindness to start the healing process.

Sylvie received treatment for her stomach issues, a steady supply of nourishing food, and a warm, quiet space where she could rest and recover. “With the help of medications and some TLC, she quickly bounced back,” Megyn shared.

In the beginning, Sylvie would still hide and freeze up, startled by even the smallest sound or sudden movement. Her world was unfamiliar—but slowly, she was learning it could be safe.

As Sylvie cautiously nibbled at her food, Megyn sat nearby, speaking in a soft, reassuring voice and gently petting her. Bit by bit, Sylvie began to relax and warm up to the presence of a caring human.

Soon, the fear in her eyes started to fade, replaced by a quiet curiosity and a growing desire for affection. “With the help of yummy treats and positive reinforcement, she’s learning that humans—and life indoors—aren’t so scary after all,” Megyn said.

Though she’s still a little skittish now and then, Sylvie has blossomed into a sweet, happy young cat who cherishes her time with the people she trusts. “She was amazing at the vet and very easy to handle, even with her independent nature,” Megyn shared.

“She may always be a bit on the shy side, but she’s incredibly gentle and absolutely adores chin scratches. Her purr is powerful—and she’ll do just about anything for a treat.”

“She’s learning that everyday movements and sounds aren’t a threat,” Megyn said. “She’s finally relaxed enough to explore the house, discover cozy nap spots, play with toys, and even bond with our resident dog and cat.”

With a feline friend by her side, Sylvie has truly come out of her shell—bouncing around, chasing toys, and playing to her heart’s content. “Seeing her feel safe enough to relax and play out in the open is a huge accomplishment,” Megyn added.

Sylvie has become a pro at mealtime, happily polishing off every last bite. Now that she no longer has to worry about where her next meal will come from, she’s filling out beautifully and fully embracing the comforts of indoor life.

“She’ll make the perfect low-maintenance companion for someone who isn’t looking for a super clingy kitty,” Megyn said. “She’s sweet, independent, and finally getting to enjoy the good life she deserves.”
